Various events were held across Devon on Thursday 8th May to commemorate Victory in Europe (VE) Day, marking the 80th anniversary since the end of World War II in Europe.

 

 

 

 

His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon, paraded on Plymouth Hoe alongside Sailors and Royal Marines from HMNB Devonport. During a ceremony held at the Belvedere Steps Memorial, senior Military personnel, alongside the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Tina Tuohy, and Civic leaders, gathered to raise the Union Flag, to begin the VE Day 80 celebrations. Representatives from Veterans associations across the City of Plymouth paraded their standards beside the HMS Drake Volunteer Band for the delight of the general public.

His Majesty’s Vice Lord Lieutenant, Rear Admiral Chris Snow CBE DL, attended the VE Day celebrations held in Okehampton. Rear Admiral Snow took the salute as Cadets paraded past. In attendance was also the Mayor of Okehampton, Councillor Allenton Fisher. The day consisted of live music, food stalls, historical displays, vintage car displays, and family fun activities.

Nick Powe DL (pictured left) attended Brixham’s VE Day celebrations. After joining the unveiling of the ‘Local Heroes and Heroines of WW2’ plaque at Churchill Memorial Gardens, he joined the Parade and marched along Berry Head Road, led by standards, pipes and drums.
