On Monday 21st September, the Lord Lieutenant of Devon presented The Original Wooden Duck Company (DCUK) with their King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade.
Founded in Devon more than 20 years ago, the company makes handcrafted wooden duck creations, which are sold through retailers across the UK, Europe, North America, and beyond.
The ducks are first designed in Devon by the company’s creative team. They are then refined, developed, and crafted in Indonesia. They work with skilled sculptors and artists where each character is individually hand-carved using harvested bamboo offcuts that would otherwise go to waste. Every defining detail is skilfully painted in Indonesia before making its journey back to Devon.
The King’s Award for Enterprise is the highest official UK business honour. They are given to companies that show great success in areas of:
- International Trade
- Innovation
- Sustainability
- Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility)
- Young Founder
