The Lord Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon, sends his congratulations to The Box, Plymouth for winning the Art Fund Museum of the Year 2026 Award. This award is the UK’s most prestigious prize for museums and galleries, recognising one outstanding museum, gallery, or heritage site in the UK each year. The museum was awarded with a £120,000 prize fund.

 

Since opening in September 2020, the museum has welcomed more than 1.3 million visitors and has more than two million artworks, objects and archival materials in its collection. Judges said it had generated more than £100m in health and wellbeing benefits, boosting Plymouth’s local economy by £244m. Art Fund director Jenny Waldman, who chaired the judging panel, described The Box as a “true jewel in the crown of the South West”.
